War and Peace
In the Autumn Term our topic was World War 2. We read the book 'Goodnight Mr Tom' and linked most of our work to this. The children learnt about the blitz, evacuees and rationing. In DT we made air raid shelters, in RE we wrote prayers to remember the fallen soldiers and in English we retold the story and wrote acrostic poems.
We visited RAF Cosford, where the children got to experience what being in an air raid shelter was like, saw war planes and got to dress up in clothes from the 'olden days'. We also played games from that era, such as 'pick up sticks' and 'flap the fish'.
Local historian, Norman Bartlam, came in to talk to the children. He brought with him some artifacts from WW2 which the children enjoyed exploring and learning about.
We were very fortunate to have a visitor come to see us who was a young child during the war and she told us of her experiences and what she could remember. The children loved listening to these first hand tales and wrote letters to thank her for her time. Our topic ended with an assembly in front of the whole school and many parents, where we shared our learning, sung songs and held a minutes silence to remember those who gave up their lives for us. The children really enjoyed immersing themselves in this topic.
