Welcome to Year 1
with
Miss Ledwidge, Miss Stagg, Miss Edwards & Miss Greenway
Welcome to Year One! Miss Ledwidge and the rest of the team are very excited to be continuing the children's learning journey together this year.
As Year One teachers, our first priority will be to support the transition into more formal learning and help the children to adapt to the new environment and routines. We will also be encouraging values to well prepare the children for the future: such as being independent, resilient, kind and respectful. We will create a classroom culture where everyone feels safe and heard and where children feel comfortable to take risks and make mistakes.
It's going to be a fantastic year, let's get started!
PE
PE is currently every Friday. Please send your child to school in their PE kit and avoid wearing jewellery, including earrings on these days.
Reading Books
At St. George's, we pride ourselves on promoting a love of reading. The children have the opportunity to; read independently every day, have many stories read to them each week and have 3 small group reading sessions per week.
Your child will be set a book every Friday online through Collins Ebooks. This will be the book they will read during group reading the following week and will be at their reading level.
Every Wednesday, your child will visit the School Library to choose a book to read for pleasure with you at home. This will not necessarily be a book at your child's level but for you to read and share together.
Equipment
Water bottles are to be brought in and taken home each day. Please only provide water for your child to drink.
Homework
Reading
It is extrememly inspiring for the children to see the people they love reading and enjoying texts at home. This could be anything from sotries, mmagazines, online texts, ebooks, newspapers or information books. To support the message we give to the children in school, please read with your child every day (10 minutes) and record it in their yellow Reading Record. Include your online book. We will check this every morning in school and there will be rewards for the children who read regularly!
Please find instructions and your child's log in for Collins Ebooks in their Reading Record.
Spelling
Spellings will be tested and new ones set every Friday. They are chosen according to sounds/words practised in phonics the previous week, so the chldren will be familiar with them.
Please practise these spellings with your child for 5 minutes per day - here is a link to a website for some ideas on how to make spellings fun!
Maths
Soon, we will be setting maths homework online...Watch this space!
